Basic Eligibility Requirements
To apply for naturalization, you generally must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a certain period of time — usually 5 years, or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen
- Have lived in the U.S. continuously and been physically present for a required amount of time
- Be able to demonstrate good moral character
- Pass an English and civics test (with some exceptions)
These are the basics, but every situation is different. Some people qualify sooner than they think. Others need to wait — or address issues before applying.
