When a loved one is taken into immigration detention, you need answers quickly. You may not know where they are, what's going to happen, or how to help.

I represent people who are currently in ICE custody, and I work closely with their families to navigate this process. My goal is to give you clarity, help you understand what's happening, and determine whether there's a path to release or relief.

Understanding Immigration Detention

Immigration detention is civil, not criminal — but it is just as serious. A person can be detained by ICE for many reasons: after an encounter at the border, following an arrest, or even after living in the U.S. for years.

Once detained, a few things may happen:

  • Bond eligibility — Some people are eligible to ask a judge for release on bond while their case continues. Others are subject to mandatory detention.
  • Removal proceedings — Most detained individuals are placed in immigration court proceedings, where a judge will decide whether they can remain in the U.S.
  • Prior removal orders — If your loved one was ordered removed in the past, they may not automatically get a new hearing. But in some cases, it's possible to reopen the case.

What If They Have a Prior Removal Order?

If your loved one was ordered deported in the past, they may not automatically get a new hearing — but that doesn't always mean the case is over.

If they fear returning to their home country, there may still be a path forward. Immigration law allows certain individuals to request protection even after a prior order, through a screening process with an asylum officer.

These processes move quickly, and the outcomes matter enormously. Having an attorney involved early can make a real difference.

How I Can Help

I represent detained individuals in:

  • Bond hearings — I'll present evidence of community ties, family support, and eligibility for release.
  • Removal defense — If there's a case for relief — such as asylum, cancellation of removal, or another form of protection — I'll represent them in immigration court.
  • Fear-based claims — I help clients prepare for credible fear and reasonable fear interviews.

I also help families understand what's happening, what documents to gather, and how to support their loved one from the outside.

What Working Together Looks Like

  • I start with you — I'll speak with you or another trusted contact to gather background information about your loved one's situation.
  • I consult with your loved one — Before finalizing any legal strategy, I need to speak directly with the person who is detained.
  • I give you honest answers — I'll explain what options exist and what the realistic outcomes are.
  • I act quickly — Detention cases are urgent. If we move forward, I'll work to prepare for hearings and deadlines as soon as possible.

Is This You?

You might need help if:

  • Your spouse, parent, child, or loved one was picked up by ICE
  • You don't know where they're being held or what's happening with their case
  • They have a bond hearing coming up
  • They have a prior removal order and you want to know if anything can be done
  • They've expressed fear of returning to their country
